Reading

Reading is a key priority for the school.  The whole school reading initiative has included our new six step approach to teach students to read and foster an appreciation for reading.

Students have enjoyed taking part in the reading opportunities provided, visiting the local library, making book recommendations, reading aloud in class and sharing stories.

As part of the whole school strategy, students will develop key skills in reading which will develop:

• Comprehension skills
• Reading fluency
• Ability to infer
• Vocabulary
• Understanding of sentence structure
• Motivation to read

Additionally, we have introduced a word of the week, tiered vocabulary displays and independent and group reading during targeted intervention time.

Students are able to gain ePraise points for suggesting three books that they would like to read which the school has purchased to ensure that reading choices are personalised to students’ interests.
